Houllier fires warning
Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier
Houllier has title hopes for Liverpool
Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier has warned he will be "ruthless" with any players who jeopardise the club's title quest.

The Frenchman is keen to eradicate any early season unrest among his first-team fringe players.

Earlier in the week, Jari Litmanen voiced his concern at a lack of regular action.

But Houllier has hit back, insisting that he will not tolerate anyone who undermines team spirit.

He said: "I am the protector of the team and the club.

"I don't tolerate people sulking and chipping away. We have a massive squad because players like Liverpool and the atmosphere is good.

"Providing the attitude is right there won't be a problem - but if it is not I can be extremely ruthless and nasty.

"If there is a cancer it has to be eradicated immediately."

Houllier has already offloaded high-profile players such as Paul Ince, David James, Titi Camara, Christian Ziege, Robbie Fowler and Nick Barmby.
