Bowyer contract on table
Lee Bowyer
Bowyer's move to Liverpool turned sour
Terry Venables is to try and persuade Lee Bowyer to commit to himself to Leeds United Football Club.

Venables will have talks with Bowyer, whose 9m move to Liverpool fell through, when the midfielder links up with the Leeds squad on their pre-season tour of Australia.

Bowyer was placed on the transfer list at Elland Road in May after failing to sign a new contract.

His present deal runs out in a year when Leeds would lose the 25-year-old on a Bosman free transfer.

Whether he stays or not is now down to him
Leeds chairman Peter Ridsdale

But chairman Peter Ridsdale says the original deal of a five-year 40,000-a-week contract is still waiting for Bowyer's signature.

"The offer of a new contract is still on the table for Lee and he will be discussing his future with Terry Venables when he arrives in Australia to join the rest of the squad," said Ridsdale.

"We want him to stay and whether he stays or not is now down to him.

"The only reason he was placed on the transfer list is because he refused to sign a new deal and we faced losing a valuable player on a Bosman free at the end of next season.

"That could still happen, of course, if Lee refuses to sign a new deal.

"It wouldn't be ideal, but given that we have made every effort to prevent this by offering him a new contract I don't see what more we could do to stop this from happening."

Leeds will play Green Bay in China on Tuesday and Dominic Matteo has been given the captaincy.

The squad then make their way to Melbourne where the face Chilean champions Colo Colo before finishing the tour with a match against a Bangkok XI in Thailand.
