| Old Firm finals down the years ![]() Rod Wallace's strike seals the 1999 cup final BBC Sport Online casts its mind back to the previous three Scottish Cup finals between Celtic and Rangers. 1999 - Rangers 1-0 Celtic Rod Wallace's goal was enough to secure the cup for Rangers and hand manager Dick Advocaat the domestic treble in his first season as manager. A typically hard-fought contest was goal-less at half-time, with Paul Lambert coming closest to breaking the deadlock in the opening period with a shot that beat Stefan Klos but hit the bar.
Lorenzo Amoruso had had a turbulent season, earning as much criticism as praise from Rangers fans and pundits. But he ensured he would become only the sixth Rangers captain in history to lead his side to the treble when he bravely got in the way of a late goal-bound shot by Lambert. Despite howls from the Celtic fans claiming a handball, referee Hugh Dallas correctly allowed play to continue and Rangers held on for the victory. 1989 - Celtic 1-0 Rangers Ten years before Wallace sealed the treble for Rangers, Joe Miller denied them the same honour. The little winger capitalised on a poor Gary Stevens passback to knock the ball past Chris Woods for the only goal of the game. But the goal was a controversial one. The move began with a Roy Aitken throw-in - despite the fact that Aitken himself had put the ball out of play. Rangers had the ball in the net in the second half through Terry Butcher, but the defender's effort was chopped off.
They and their supporters were spurred on in no small way by the news that former hero Mo Johnston would be re-joining the club the following season. But Rangers got some revenge for the cup final defeat by stealing Johnston from under Celtic's noses. Nevertheless, Celtic had denied their old foes the treble. 1980 - Celtic 1-0 Rangers (aet) This final was marred by rioting by both sets of supporters at full-time. The fighting led to alcohol consumption being banned from Scottish football grounds. On the field, the players battled through a goal-less 90 minutes, taking the game into extra-time.
Celtic's Danny McGrain fired in a shot, which took a deflection off George McCluskey, taking the ball past Rangers keeper Peter McCloy. But this is not a game that will be remembered for the goal as mounted police had to be called in to try to break up the hundreds of battling fans who brought shame upon the Scottish game. |
