| Thursday, 2 January, 2003, 16:57 GMT High drama in Edinburgh derby ![]() Mark de Vries scored Hearts' second goal Hearts 4-4 Hibernian Two stoppage-time goals from substitute Graeme Weir gave Hearts a share of the spoils in a scintillating and controversial Edinburgh derby. There were four goals in the final five minutes, three in time added on, after Hibernian looked to be heading for their first derby victory of the season thanks to goals from Craig James and Grant Brebner. But third-top Hearts pulled back for the second time in the match from two goals behind to stay ahead of their city rivals in the Scottish Premier League table. Hearts head coach Craig Levein had stuck with the side that defeated Dundee.
Hibs goalkeeper Nick Colgan returned from suspension to replace Tony Caig, with Paul Fenwick, Tom McManus and Ian Murray also back in the side. Skipper John O'Neil was missing with flu, while Paco Luna and Mathias Doumbe dropped to the substitutes' bench. Hibs took the game to their hosts immediately from kick off and took the lead after 11 minutes. Defender Alan Maybury was short with a pass back and Townsley nipped in before goalkeeper Roddy McKenzie to slot the ball into the unguarded net. Hearts paid for a couple of missed chances when Hibs extended their lead in the 17th minute following a free-kick from Craig James. Tam McManus rose just inside the Hearts penalty box to flick the ball with his head into the net off the inside of the post. Steve Pressley brought Hearts back into the game after slotting hom a controversial penalty in the 30th minute. Andy Kirk was one-on-one when he tumbled under a challenge from Colgan, but referee Stuart Dougal decided to show the goalkeeper a yellow instead of a red card after what must have been the slightest of touches on the striker. Hearts had another penalty claim turned down after the break when Jarkko Wiss appeared to handle the ball inside his own box.
On-loan James put Hibs ahead once again when the ball broke to him from Wiss' corner and he bulleted home from just inside the 18-yard box. The Easter Road side were then awarded a penalty in injury time when the ball appeared to be handled by Pressley on the ground. Paatelainen's spot-kick was blocked by McKenzie, but substitute Brebner was on hand to fire home the rebound. The points looked secure for Hibs, but Weir managed to drive the ball into the net in the fourth minute of injury time. The teenager then earned hero status with the Hearts fans when he fired home De Vries' cross 42 seconds later.
