| Saturday, 11 January, 2003, 16:55 GMT Jenas ruins Hammers party ![]() Defoe fires home a superb goal just before half time West Ham 2-2 Newcastle Jermaine Jenas ruined West Ham's Upton Park party with a sensational equaliser to deny the Hammers a first Premiership home win of the season. A point on Lee Bowyer's debut was still enough to haul West Ham off the foot of the Premiership table, but that was scant consolation for manager Glenn Roeder. The Hammers' spirits were lifted by the arrival of Bowyer, who made his debut just two days after his move from Leeds.
A small group of Hammers fans protested against the signing of Bowyer before the game. And an early Craig Bellamy strike threatened to further marr the homecoming of the East London-born midfielder. Bellamy, celebrating an extended contract with the Magpies, turned and fired home a left-foot shot on 10 minutes after Shola Ameobi had exposed West Ham's defensive frailties to create the opener.
Steve Lomas, celebrating his 300th career appearance, launched a long throw which Newcastle failed to deal with and Cole got ahead of Andy Griffin to crash home a left-foot shot. Cole has been inspirational since being handed the captain's armband last month and he continued to pull the strings as Glenn Roeder's side dominated.
It took something special from Defoe, who accepted Lomas' cross from the right, and twisted twice before firing home for a superb individual goal. Despite their dominance, West Ham always looked vulnerable at the back, particularly when the lively Bellamy was in full flight.
He chested the ball down and hit a left-foot shot into the top corner for his first Premiership goal, hot on the heels of his FA Cup strike at Newcastle. There was still time for Bowyer to spurn a chance to write the headlines with a winner but a debut goal, like that home win, was tantalisingly out of reach. West Ham: James, Lomas, Breen, Dailly, Winterburn (Minto 56), Bowyer, Cisse (Hutchison 80), Carrick, Cole, Defoe, Sinclair (Pearce 81). Newcastle: Given, Griffin, Caldwell, Hughes, Bernard, Acuna (LuaLua 65), Dyer, Jenas, Robert, Bellamy, Ameobi (Cort 86). Booked: Griffin. Attendance: 35,048 Referee: J Winter (Cleveland). |
