| | Sunday, 29 September, 2002, 10:29 GMT 11:29 UK Wenger hails 'outstanding' Arsenal  Leeds were unable to stem the flow of Arsenal attacks Arsene Wenger said his team were edging nearer to perfection after Arsenal outclassed Leeds in a 4-1 win on Saturday. Two goals from Kanu and strikes from Kolo Toure and Thierry Henry gave the Gunners their sixth win from eight games this season, and kept them top of the table. "It is difficult to say if today was perfect," Wenger said.
"It was certainly one of our top performances but we want to get nearer and nearer to perfection. "I was unhappy about the goal we conceded but in fairness to the players, they were outstanding and it was a pleasure to watch. "Some games may not always be as fluent as that, but I am not scared that we will dip from this level." Leeds manager Terry Venables, whose side was subjected to wave after wave of sweeping attacks, added his praise for a rampant Arsenal side and said that their ambition of ending the season unbeaten was realistic. "We've got to accept Arsenal are an outstanding team, and Gilberto Silva makes a difference to an already outstanding team," he said.
"It's a huge call to predict they will end the Premiership season unbeaten but when you see them playing it's possible. "It's unlikely because at some stage I think someone will get to grips with them but you never know." Venables said the only consolation from a torrid afternoon was his players' perseverance which resulted in a late goal from Harry Kewell. "They never gave up," said Venables. "It's easy to lose your temper when you are losing, or to give up, but that is not the style this club deserves." It was Leeds' fourth defeat in eight games, and Venables, who took over from David O'Leary in the close-season, admitted he might have to change his approach. "It's early days but we haven't played like we can," he said. "The defeat and performance today was my fault. I am trying to change things here for the long term. "But maybe we'll have to re-think it, and about where we go from here." | |
