Sunday's games

Arsenal v Birmingham

Birmingham will experience similar problems to West Brom, who were handed an opening day fixture at Old Trafford.

Visiting the reigning Premiership champions for your first Premiership fixture is a difficult challenge.

I expect Arsenal to possess too much pace, power and skill for Steve Bruce's team to be able to hold out for 90 minutes.

Verdict: Home win

Aston Villa v Liverpool

Aston Villa seem to be rapidly running out of midfield players, with George Boateng and Paul Merson both leaving the club.

By contrast, Liverpool's real strength is in midfield and they will be looking to put in a strong performance after their mediocre showing in the Community Shield.

I sometimes think that Liverpool play with the brakes slightly on but I think Gerard Houllier is trying to change that.

Verdict: Narrow away win

Monday's game

News image
Newcastle v West Ham

I know Newcastle have one or two injury problems but I fancy them strongly in front of 52,000 screaming Geordies delighted that the football season had finally started again.

I think West Ham will have another solid season but they do not have the greatest record away from Upton Park.

Verdict: Home win
