| Saturday, 11 May, 2002, 18:14 GMT 19:14 UK Thordarson's uncertain future ![]() Thordarson kept his part of the bargain Stoke manager Gudjon Thordarson said after his team's 2-0 Division Two play-off win over Brentford that he does not know whether he will be at the club next season. Thordarson is out of contract at the end of June and yet to discuss a new deal with the club's owners - a consortium based in Iceland. The former Iceland national team manager succeeded Gary Megson as Stoke boss two-and-a-half years ago after the consortium took over at Stoke.
But despite finally succeeding in his aim of guiding his team into Division One he does not know where his future lies. "I haven't got a clue what is happening," said Thordarson. Stoke had lost at the semi-final stage of the play-offs for the previous two seasons. And after the club's failure to win promotion last year Thordarson's contract was reduced from three years to just one. "They asked for results and I have delivered - and now they have to deliver a proper contract," said the Potters' boss. "The ideal situation would be for me to be at Stoke at the start of next season but whatever happens I will not be without a job somewhere." The Stoke boss also wants some quick answers. "They haven't got much time - the new season starts in August. "They can't sit in Iceland and make decisions quickly - there are players coming out of contract, players that we have brought in on loan and they need answers. "I also need answers because there is interest in me from elsewhere - both in England and abroad.
"I would love to stay with Stoke but there are things that need to be sorted." But there are no meetings planned to discuss a new contract for Thordarson, who is going on holiday next week. "The members of the consortium watched the match at the ground but I have not seen them. "I have no meetings arranged with them but I have meetings arranged with other clubs and I need to sort my future out. "But if Stoke offer me a contract tomorrow I will probably sign it because I have got to look after myself. In this game nobody else will." |
