| Friday, 24 January, 2003, 12:05 GMT Tanzania star grounded ![]() Tanzania may have to do without star player Njohole Tanzania's Swiss-based professional, Renatus Njohole, has criticised the Football Association of Tanzania (FAT) for the poor way he has been treated. Following a dispute over an unpaid plane ticket, Njohole says he is not sure whether he will ever don the national colours again. Njohole played for the Taifa Stars in the African Cup of Nations qualifier against Benin in September last year, but FAT did not send him an air ticket. Eager to wear the national colours for the first time since he started his three-year career at Swiss second division club Yverdon, Njohole asked the club to buy him a ticket, with an agreement that FAT would reimburse them. But FAT is yet to pay the money back to Yverdon. "My club deducted $880 from my October salary, when the money was supposed to be paid by FAT," the 22 year-old Njohole lamented. "Based on their style of doing business, I guess my match against Benin was my first and last for the Taifa Stars."
"I telephoned (FAT secretary general) Wambura to inquire about the payment but he did not answer the phone, I guess after recognising my number," he said. "It is sad and unfortunate, I have always wanted to serve my country but FAT are not interested," Njohole added. Acting FAT secretary-general Charles Masanja said: "The debt is in our records yes, but I am not the right person to answer a question as to why it has not been settled. "Wambura should know well." Masanja is holding office after the FAT executive committee suspended Wambura early this month. Wambura refused to comment when BBC Sport Online approached him for his side of the story. "I am not working with FAT office, go and ask those in office," Wambura said. | See also: 20 Aug 02 | Africans abroad 13 Aug 02 | Africans abroad 20 Jul 02 | Africa Top Africa stories now: Links to more Africa stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
