A review group has been set up to look at ways of streamlining its calendar. There are currently three annual contests - the African Champions League, Cup Winners Cup and the Caf Cup. "We will see if we might be able to combine two of the tournaments into one, starting in 2004," said Caf secretary-general Mustapha Fahmy. Asia and Europe have changed their club competitions in recent years and Fahmy said commercial and television considerations were driving Africa in the same direction. Europe's expanded Champions League can have up to four entries from one country and the Cup Winners Cup has been dropped in favour of the Uefa Cup. The African Champions League is the only event which offers any form of prize money to its participants. Clubs that reach the group stages share three million dollars in television and marketing revenue. Caf's club review could result in the expansion of the Champions League, which at the moment only allows for one entry per country. It could also lead to the axing of the Cup Winners Cup or the Caf Cup. Fahmy said the study group would come up with recommendations by mid-2003. | See also: 22 Oct 02 | Africa 23 Oct 02 | Dunfermline Athletic 22 Oct 02 | Africa Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Africa stories now: Links to more Africa stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
