Mashaba prepares SA squad
MacBeth Sibaya
Sibaya is one of the few World Cup players likely to be selected

Ephraim Mashaba will announce his first squad as South Africa coach on Tuesday for the Cosafa Cup semi-final against Swaziland.

But the side is not expected to contain any of the regulars who have featured for Bafana-Bafana in recent years.

Mashaba is likely to use players in South Africa's premier league as well as some foreign-based footballers who have been on the fringe of the national team.

South Africa play Swaziland at Polokwane on 24 August, seeking to reach the final of the annual southern African championship for the first time.

Mashaba's future plans will become evident when he names the squad facing Ivory Coast in a 2004 African Nations Cup qualifying match in Abidjan on 8 September.

Bartlett returns

Bafana-Bafana face a tough start against the Ivorians and Mashaba has been warned that he might have difficulty in calling up key European-based players.

On Wednesday, South African newspapers reported that English Premier League side Charlton Athletic have told Shaun Bartlett he would again be jeopardising his chances at the club by travelling back to Africa for the Nations Cup game.

Bartlett was sidelined by Charlton after returning from the last Nations Cup finals in Mali with injury and had to undergo an operation in May, which meant he missed the chance to captain South Africa at the World Cup finals in South Korea.
