Bonfrere blasts his boys
Jo Bonfrere is now resigned to a long hard fight in the Champions League
A brave face - but Bonfrere knows Ahly are in trouble

Al Ahly's new coach Jo Bonfrere has slammed both his own side and Jeanne d'Arc after his side lost 2-1 in the African Champions League on Saturday.

The Senegalese champions' triumph was a result few would have predicted, but according to Bonfrere it is one that should have been avoided.

"We had the wrong mentality right from the start," Bonfere said in the post-match press conference after his first game in charge.

"By the time we realised we had to fight to win this game Jeanne d'Arc had already scored their first goal."

The Egyptian team did get back into the match, but to the disgust of their supporters let the Senegalese score a breakaway goal through Mouhamadou Diaw.

After going behind for a second time, Ahly went to pieces.

"After 2-1 we did not think or play tactical football, we only ran around nervously," said the Dutch coach.

No congratulations

The home defeat is a huge blow to the reigning champions, and a personal setback for Bonfrere.

"It is not nice to lose your first game when you have so many things in your mind to do for the club, but lucky for us there are more games to come," he said.

"We hope that the players are now awake and know that we have to fight harder in every game than ever before."

The Dutch coach was not particularly complementary to Jeanne d'Arc either.

"I believe they had a lucky result. They are not a great team," he said

"We allowed them to score the goals and we allowed them to play football, especially in our midfield.

"That is why they go home with the 3 points, and not us."
