| Wednesday, 19 June, 2002, 17:24 GMT 18:24 UK The Sunday Oliseh column Sunday Oliseh may not have been with Nigeria in Japan but the ex-captain of the Super Eagles is writing exclusive World Cup features for the BBC's African football website. He says Senegal's success is a result of team unity, managerial stability and careful planning. Senegal have done a great job of upholding Africa's dignity at the World Cup. To have beaten Sweden without Salif Diao and Khalilou Fadiga shows the team has strength in depth. It is amazing that a player of Henri Camara's quality could have been left on the bench for that long.
It looks like Senegal will remain a major force in African football for a long time. Bruno Metsu must take the credit for building this great team. His decision to stick with the players that he took to the African Nations Cup has been vindicated. Senegal is the only country that prepared for the World Cup without problems and it has reflected in their results. Cameroon allowed money and flight problems to distract them, while Tunisia and South Africa changed their managers with just a few months to the tournament. As for Nigeria, there is really not much to say. Our problems are known to the whole world. Semi-final dreams Senegal's match against Turkey would not be an easy game but they are more than capable of beating them.
Ferdinand Coly is a tough reliable defender, with an ability to overlap effectively and their midfield and attack is solid. For probably the first time, I would be praying for another African team to do well, as a victory for Senegal will be a great day for all Africans. I never thought that Senegal will get to the quarter-finals before Nigeria. When I look at the players that we have and what we are capable of, it is really sad that we have never gone this far in the World Cup. The politics in Nigerian football killed our dreams and that is a pity. But in the meantime, I wish my Africans brothers the very best of luck.
