For the first time in the English game, clubs are preparing for the opening of the January transfer window.

In the past, transfers have occurred frequently throughout the season, but now clubs can only buy and sell in January.

BBC Sport Online looks at which clubs want to bring in new blood - and which clubs are desperate to offload.

Arsenal
Arsene Wenger has already claimed he will be a spectator, not a participant when the transfer window opens.

But the injury to goalkeeper Rami Shaaban may force a rethink, and a �2m swoop for Fenerbahce's Turkish international Rustu Recber.

Aston Villa
Graham Taylor has little cash to spend, but a swap deal is certainly possible.

Alpay, Bosko Balaban, Mustapha Hadji or Juan Pablo Angel could be making way for one of Olivier Dacourt, David Batty or Muzzy Izzet.

Birmingham City

Steve Bruce wants World Cup winner Dugarry

French World Cup winner Christophe Dugarry has been strongly linked with a free transfer to St Andrews.

Steve Bruce is not expected to splash the cash, but Lens' Senegal international defender Ferdinand Coly is expected to join for a six-month loan on 1 January, with Cameroon's Bill Tchato also set to sign.

Blackburn Rovers
There are unlikely to be wholesale changes for Graeme Souness, although he is tipped to sign �5m defender Gabriel Milito from Argentine champions Independiente as cover for Michael Dawson.

Veteran striker Craig Hignett may find himself on the move, if the right offer comes in.

Bolton Wanderers
Sam Allardyce is desperate to strengthen his squad for what is likely to be a tense relegation battle for his team in 2003.

Money is not exactly flowing at the Reebok Stadium, so �2.5m Michael Ricketts could be sold to fund a defender or two.

Charlton Athletic
The in-form Addicks will be keen for a new striker to improve their lean goals scored tally.

Alan Curbishley is running the rule over Celta Vigo's South African international Benni McCarthy, and could try to bring him in on loan.

Chelsea

Gudjohnsen is reportedly wanted by Man Utd

Another team claiming they will be spectators when the spending spree begins, although they are keen to reduce their monster wage bill.

Claudio Ranieri would not think twice about offloading �40,000-a-week Winston Bogarde - and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Eidur Gudjohnsen could go in a big money deal.

Everton
David Moyes will not want to shake things up too much given the resurgent form of the Toffees this season.

A �160,000 swoop for Celtic midfielder Colin Healy is likely to be Moyes' main dealing in January.

Fulham
Rangers' striker Barry Ferguson is top of Jean Tigana's shopping list, although the Frenchman may have to settle for a loan signing.

Like Chelsea, Fulham would like to reduce their wage bill, with �40,000-a-week Steve Marlet the man most likely to be off if the right offer comes in.

Leeds United

A host of clubs want Lee Bowyer

Terry Venables is more likely to be selling than buying in January, with Lee Bowyer linked with both Tottenham and Newcastle.

Mark Viduka and Olivier Dacourt may also leave for the right price, and the money they generate could open the way for a swoop for Brazilian World Cup winner Kleberson.

Liverpool
One of the few teams expected to splash out, with Gerard Houllier tipped to launch a �15m spree to revitalise Liverpool's faltering season.

Multi-million pound bids for Leeds' Harry Kewell, Charlton's Paul Konchesky, Blackburn's Damien Duff and Basle midfielder Hakan Yakin are all thought to be under discussion at Anfield.

Manchester City
Kevin Keegan can barely wait to open his wallet come January, with Arsenal's �4m midfielder Ray Parlour just one of a long list of potential purchases.

Expect bids for Brazil's World Cup winner Cafu and German goalscorer Miroslav Klose, while Keegan is also keen on Marseille midfielder Djamel Belmadi.

Manchester United
Old Trafford officials claim they will not be opening the purse strings, but rumours of an �8m bid for Spurs' Simon Davies persist.

Deportivo La Coruna's Diego Tristan and Eidur Gudjohnsen are also highly-prized by Sir Alex Ferguson and the striker-hunting Scotsman could consider a swoop for David Bellion.

Middlesbrough

Boro could swoop for Jeffers

Boro boss Steve McClaren wants strikers - but budget restraints could limit his options.

Kevin Phillips and Francis Jeffers are both likely to be out of his price range, and Derby's Malcolm Christie will not come cheaply either. Dean Windass and Noel Whelan could be on their way out.

Newcastle United
Expect plenty of action at Newcastle, with �15m Kieron Dyer being hunted by Juventus and Inter Milan.

Robson will not be keen to sell Dyer, but his wants list - including Ukranian international Andrei Husin, West Ham's Trevor Sinclair, Leeds' Lee Bowyer, Chelsea's John Terry and Shakhtar Donetsk's Isaac Okoronkwo - may require some fund-raising.

Southampton
Saints boss Gordon Strachan is unlikely to bring anyone in, with cash restricting his options in any case.

The fiery Scotsman's main job could be to ensure Saints hold on to hot properties James Beattie and Wayne Bridge - although he would probably be happy to see Kevin Davies go.

Sunderland

Phillips is a striker in demand

With no funds available to Howard Wilkinson, much depends on whether Kevin Phillips stays at the Stadium of Light.

If Phillips is snapped up by Manchester United or Middlesbrough, the money could be spent on a big-name replacement, although no-one specific has been mentioned.

Tottenham Hotspur
Les Ferdinand could wave goodbye to White Hart Lane with a move to either West Ham or Portsmouth, but Glenn Hoddle is adamant that �10m Stephen Carr is staying.

Sergei Rebrov is also up for grabs at the right price, while Lee Bowyer and Kevin Phillips have been mentioned as possible targets for Hoddle.

West Bromwich Albion
The Baggies have little to spend, but plenty on their wants list as they aim to pull clear of relegation.

Derby's Malcolm Christie is one of their targets, although CSKA Sofia midfielder Artim Sakiri, Bruges defender Peter van der Heyden and Chelsea's Bernard Lambourde are more likely to move to the Hawthorns.

West Ham United
Could the Hammers really grab Gabriel Batistuta from Roma on loan? The persistent rumours suggest there will be an approach from Glenn Roeder.

Also expected to move to Upton Park on loan is Maccabi Haifa striker Yakubu Ayegbeni, while Les Ferdinand is expected to switch from Tottenham Hotspur, if he does not go to Portsmouth.
