| Sunday, 29 December, 2002, 16:15 GMT Wenger to sign top keeper ![]() Rami Shabaan broke his leg on Christmas Eve Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has confirmed he is determined to recruit a top-level goalkeeper when the transfer window opens next week. Wenger has lost Rami Shaaban and Stuart Taylor to injuries over the past couple of weeks. And with teenager Craig Holloway considered too inexperienced, the Gunners boss needs new back-up for first-choice David Seaman. Given that this is his last chance to make signings until the end of the season, he is unwilling to take a risk on an largely untested keeper.
Wenger revealed his transfer plans ahead of Sunday's Premiership match against Liverpool. He wrote in his match programme notes: "On Christmas Eve, the whole club, and Rami Shaaban in particular, received some bad news when we heard that he will miss the rest of the season with a broken leg. "With Stuart Taylor also out with a broken finger, we will be looking for a new goalkeeper. "We will be looking to get somebody in as soon as possible after the transfer window opens. "I will be aiming to bring in somebody on loan, but probably with an option of signing them permanently in June. "Until then, we need David Seaman to stay fit and hope that nothing happens," he added. "Craig Holloway is a very good young goalkeeper but is still only 18 and does not have the necessary experience to play at this level. "Whoever we get in will need to have a lot of potential, but also be a very close level to David Seaman because Stuart and Rami are both out for a while." Arsenal's scouts will already have drawn up a list of candidates as they have long been on the look-out for a successor to Seaman, who will be 40 next year. The Gunners' shortage of goalkeeping cover was emphasised on Sunday when Wenger named Taylor on the bench against Liverpool despite his damaged finger. |
