The victory, courtesy of Ebbe Sand's headed goal, barely did justice to the Dane's domination. Apart from good performances by Kevin McNaughton and Gary Naysmith, there was little to cheer for Scotland coach Bertie Vogts. The home side started positively, with Davie Weir's long ball finding its way to Steven Thompson. The Dundee United striker found his way to goal blocked and laid the ball into the path of Paul Lambert, but his shot was wayward. And the Scots paid the price when they fell behind after only eight minutes. Slack marking in defence left Dennis Rommedahl free on the right and his driven cross was headed into the net by the unmarked Sand.
Scotland goalkeeper Rab Douglas misjudged the cross, allowing Christian Poulsen to drive the ball goalwards, only for Robbie Stockdale to clear off the line. The Danes played four up front for much of the time, with Maurice Ross man-marking Jon Dahl Tomasson. Their pace and movement made it difficult for the Scots to gain possession. Thomas Gravesen's long-range effort flew wide on 35 minutes and, moments later Douglas had to get down smartly to save from Tomasson. As the second half began the Scots were again swiftly on the attack and Thompson's shot was blocked by the Danish goalkeeper after the striker looked to be having his jersey pulled in the penalty box. But Denmark continued to dominate proceedings, with the Scots unable to exert any real pressure. Danish substitute Claus Jensen came within inches of getting a second for the vistors with seven minutes remaining, his shot curling just wide of the post. A late Kevin Kyle header went narrowly wide for Scotland, but, in truth, an equaliser would have been unjust.
