| Wednesday, 22 May, 2002, 16:30 GMT 17:30 UK Stillie joins Dunfermline ![]() Hibs could not afford a new deal for Craig Brewster Goalkeeper Derek Stillie has completed his move from Wigan Athletic to Dunfermline Athletic. And Hibernian striker Craig Brewster is poised to join him at East End Park. Dunfermline chairman John Yorkston on Wednesday confirmed that 35-year-old Brewster has agreed to join the Pars when he returns from holiday in Greece. Stillie signed a two-year deal on Wednesday afternoon and St Mirren defender Scott Walker could be the next to arrive.
Yorkston said: "He is on holiday in Crete at the moment, but he has spoken to the manager on the phone and we have no reason to doubt that he is coming. "We'll just have to wait now until Brewster finishes his holiday and then we'll get that all sorted out when he gets back." Brewster told The Mirror: "I had a very good year at Hibs, but they made it clear they were not in a position to offer me anything. "I had the option to go back to Greece, but Scotland was my first option." Brewster was looking forward to playing alongside former Raith team-mates Stevie Crawford and Jason Dair, plus playing under Athletic assistant Jimmy Nicholl. "Jimmy Nicholl signed me at Raith and both he and the manager obviously know what I can do," he said. Yorkston was not concerned with Brewster's age and hoped he would do a similar job to veteran midfielder Ian Ferguson, who departed at the end of the season. "Craig's going to hold the ball up, get on the end of crosses and bring other players into the game, but don't get him to chase a 50-yard through-ball," he said.
It had already been announced that Republic of Ireland Under-21 midfielder Gary Dempsey would be joining Dunfermline for 50,000 from Waterford United on Friday. Now former Aberdeen and Scotland Under-21 goalkeeper Stillie will sign a two-year deal, despite reports that he had been asking for too much compensation to move from English football. The 28-year-old lost his place at Wigan in December after having played 44 times for the Second Division club. Dunfermline have been looking for someone to challenge first choice Marco Ruitenbeek now that Scott Thomson is concentrating on coaching. Defender Walker could be the next arrival, the 27-year-old centre-half having been told by cash-strapped First Division club St Mirren that he can leave if an offer comes in. |
