Dunfermline boss Jimmy Calderwood
Dempsey is one of four targets for Jimmy Calderwood
Republic of Ireland Under-21 attacking midfielder Gary Dempsey is to join Dunfermline Athletic from Waterford United in a 50,000 deal.

The Wexford-born 21-year-old had a successful five-day trial with the Scottish Premier League club and is expected to complete the necessary paperwork next week.

Dempsey, the first of four signings targeted by manager Jimmy Calderwood, is to sign a two-year deal.

The former Everton youth told Dunfermline's official website: "I am delighted to further my career at Dunfermline Athletic but sorry to be leaving Waterford United given they gave me a chance in the first team when I came on loan from Bray Wanderers.

I couldn't believe how great the lads were
Gary Dempsey
"I am grateful to them for letting me go and wish them all the best for the coming season."

Having been at English Premiership side Everton as a teenager but was released two years ago.

He joined Bray Wanderers on his return to Ireland and then moved to Waterford, where he became the clubs leading goalscorer last season, hitting the net 14 times.

Dempsey was voted the supporters player of the year.

Ireland Under-21 boss Don Givens recommended him to Calderwood.

Now he was looking forward to being reunited with his new team-mates for pre-season trips to New Zealand and Holland.

"When I came to Dunfermline the players all made me welcome, having a laugh and a joke," said Dempsey.

"I couldn't believe how great the lads were. There is nothing worse than being a new face in a dressing-room and no-one says anything."
