| Indian batsmen slay England ![]() Tendulkar raises his bat at a packed Headingley Third Test, Headingley, day two (stumps): India 584-4 Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly hit a succession of audacious sixes in the last hour as a packed house in Leeds were finally treated to some sparkling cricket. By smashing 96 runs off the last 11.1 overs of play, the two batsmen - who followed up Rahul Dravid's efforts on Thursday by each hitting centuries - have put India in prime position now to win this match. The two batsmen were at the very top of their game and there is no way the home side can win this match now. In fact, if India continue batting on Saturday, England would need a lot more than 400 just to avoid the follow-on. In the first session, England had their odd moment of misfortune, with Alex Tudor in particular entitled to feel hard done by. But generally it was all about more highly intelligent batting from the Indians. Tendulkar showed his strength on both sides of the wicket. An extraordinary square cut to a ball that barely left the turf from Andrew Flintoff was an example of his brilliant natural ability.
He was a little lucky when an inside edge off Andrew Caddick just missed leg stump. The best shot of the morning came as Tendulkar went past 50 with a compact pull off Tudor for four. In the middle session, Ashley Giles claimed England's first success of the day as Dravid was lured down the track only to be stumped as the ball turned and bounced. Sourav Ganguly came in and motored along with some crunching shots to the off-side fence, and Tendulkar overtook Bradman in the all-time Test century list. The shot that took him to the mark was a perfectly-executed on-drive off Giles, and though England then adopted some containing tactics before tea it was largely irrelevant. In the final session, the run rate remained sluggish with Tendulkar reluctant to come down the track to Giles. But when Nasser Hussain took the third new ball, carnage ensued. With new ball bowlers Matthew Hoggard and Andy Caddick quickly pummelled out of the attack, Hussian was again forced to return to Giles, who was carted for 23 runs in one over. Ganguly reached his century in that over and was finally bowled on the last ball of the day by Tudor. For his part, Tendulkar finished unbeaten on 185. |
