| Hoggard sparks India collapse ![]() Jones sends Sehwag's off stump cartwheeling First Test, Lord's, day four (close): England 487 & 301-6 dec; India 221 & 232-6 Three wickets from Matthew Hoggard on a sweltering Sunday afternoon in London pushed England to the brink of victory with a full day to play. In Hoggard's key over, he produced an inswinger to bowl Sachin Tendulkar off his pads for 12 to claim his 50th Test wicket, before having Sourav Ganguly lbw for a golden duck next ball. Ganguly was unlucky since the ball clearly pitched outside leg stump, but India were outplayed fair and square yet again. Michael Vaughan and John Crawley had earlier scored centuries as England declared their second innings on 301-6 to set the tourists a massive 568 to win.
India's openers responded positively and Virender Sehwag hammered a flurry of boundaries after being dropped on three by Nasser Hussain at third slip off the bowling of Andrew Flintoff. Sehwag put on 61 with Wasim Jaffer and scored 27 before Simon Jones sent his off-stump cartwheeling with his second delivery. Jaffer hit seven boundaries in his 53 and looked composed, adding another 49 runs with Rahul Dravid. Vaughan claimed his first Test wicket when Jaffer edged to Hussain at first slip, but Dravid cruised to an immaculate half century without looking troubled. Hoggard turned the innings on its head with his double strike and added the wicket of Ajay Ratra after Dravid had chopped Ashley Giles onto his stumps to end a stylish innings of 63. But Ajit Agarkar joined VVS Laxman to put on an unbroken seventh wicket partnership of 62 to force the Test into the final day as India reached 232-6 at the close of day four.
Vaughan and Crawley looked to be in a hurry as England resumed their innings in the morning. Vaughan wasted no time in reaching his third Test ton, using his feet to loft Anil Kumble for four and mis-timing a repeat of the same shot to run three for his third Test ton. But he was dismissed next ball, slashing Nehra to gully after hitting 11 fours and facing 141 deliveries for his 100. Flintoff was promoted up the order as England looked for quick runs, but scored just seven and Alec Stewart played an entertaining cameo of 33. Hussain delayed his declaration long enough for Crawley to reach his fourth Test century off 132 balls, hitting eight boundaries. England: N Hussain (capt), MA Butcher, MP Vaughan, GP Thorpe, JP Crawley, AJ Stewart (wkt), A Flintoff, C White, AF Giles, MJ Hoggard, SP Jones. India: Wasim Jaffer, Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly (capt), VVS Laxman, Ajay Ratra (wkt), Ajit Agarkar, Zaheer Khan, Ashish Nehra, Anil Kumble. |
