England make India suffer
Craig White takes the key wicket of Sachin Tendulkar

First Test, Lord's, day three (close)
England 487 & 184-3; India 221

England have taken full control of the first Test, first by dismissing India cheaply, then by scoring quickly in their second innings.

With a lead of 450 now, the home side will be able to declare well before lunch on Sunday.

And with some uneven bounce in the wicket, they will be confident they can press for the win.

India added just 46 runs in the first session, losing Rahul Dravid for 44 and Sachin Tendulkar for an uncharacteristically scratchy 16.

But the second session was even better for the home side, with debutant Simon Jones claiming his first two wickets, and Matthew Hoggard ending with 3-33 as India were bowled out.

Tendulkar almost fell for a duck in the second over of the day but Jones was unlucky when a bottom edge just evaded the inside edge.

England did well to frustrate Dravid and Tendulkar by using a variety of tactics designed to prevent free scoring.

Short-of-a-length balls jagged back into the batsmen's bodies, then Craig White came on bowling big inswingers from well wide of the off stump with seven men on the off-side.

The reward finally came when Hoggard got a ball to bounce a fraction extra and Dravid was able only to steer it into the hands of Michael Vaughan at gully.

Not long afterwards, Tendulkar was finally out, edging an expansive drive off White straight into Alec Stewart's gloves.

Sachin dismissed

After lunch, Sourav Ganguly made just five before falling for an off-side trap set by Hussain, Andrew Flintoff grabbing his second wicket.

Jones then got in on the act, as Ajay Ratra was caught behind trying something extravagant, with Ajit Agarkar pouched at slip.

Anil Kumble chopped White onto his stumps for a duck, before Zaheer Khan fell in the first over of the second new ball, Hoggard having him caught at first slip.

Despite establishing a 266-run lead, Nasser Hussain opted against enforcing the follow-on.

And that decision paid dividends as a clearly demoralised India were forced back onto the field.

Although England lost three wickets with just 76 runs on the board, they kept scoring at a good rate.

Faint edge

Mark Butcher was unlucky to be given out lbw off Anil Kumble for 18 after getting a faint bottom edge on a sweep.

Hussain fell to Agarkar for 12 while the out-of-sorts Graham Thorpe was removed by Kumble for one.

But Vaughan (81 not out) and Crawley (56 not out) finally took the match out of India's reach with a cultured stand of 108, most of their runs coming square of the wicket.

As Indian shoulders sagged, both men were dropped, off the unfortunate Ashish Nehra. It had been a pitiful effort throughout the day by the tourists.
