| Tendulkar inspires India victory Singh and Sehwag celebrate the dismissal of Atapattu NatWest Series, Bristol: India 304 (50 overs) beat Sri Lanka 241 (44.1 overs) by 63 runs Sachin Tendulkar smashed a brilliant century as India beat Sri Lanka by 63 runs in the NatWest match in Bristol. Tendulkar took Sri Lanka's bowlers apart with a six and 12 fours in a 102-ball 113. Sourav Ganguly had an inauspicious 200th one-day international at the crease when he was run out for nine, beaten by Chamara Silva's throw from fine leg. Virender Sehwag hit six boundaries in an entertaining 39 off 40 balls before becoming the second run out victim.
Sehwag's demise brought Tendulkar to the crease, and he set about giving the ecstatic crowd a masterclass in constructing and pacing an innings. He put on 99 with Dinesh Mongia, who fell two runs short of a deserved half century when Thilan Samaraweera bowled him through the gate. Sri Lanka dragged themselves back in the match when Upul Chandana and Samaraweera trapped Rahul Dravid and Yuvraj Singh lbw inside three overs. But Tendulkar made them pay with a series of dazzling strokes, using his feet well to the spinners, to record his 33rd one-day international century. Mohammad Kaif kept him company long enough for the pair to put on 74 in 66 balls, but wickets started to fall after Tendulkar was caught by Chandana off the bowling of Chaminda Vaas. Kaif holed out after making 41 from 43 balls and India lost a rash of wickets, but still passed 300 and recorded the highest score of the NatWest Series.
He unleashed an array of shots, racking up a six and 11 fours, in a stand of 85 with Marvan Atapattu before Harbhajan came into the attack and had him stumped in his first over. Sri Lanka still had hope with Atapattu compiling a patient 53 from 75 balls, as he put on 64 with Mahela Jayawardene. But Jayawardene threw away his wicket spooning an attempted reverse sweep off Yuvraj to Ashish Nehra at short fine leg. The killer blow came when Atapattu was run out trying to force the pace and Nuwan Zoysa, promoted up the order as pinch hitter, hit Ganguly straight to mid-off. Wickets then fell at regular intervals, with Silva scoring 30, as Harbhajan profited from some rash strokes to end with 4-46. The end came, appropriately, with a run out after Dilhara Fernando got away with a skied drive, but failed to make his ground going for a second run.
