Earlier, Marcus Trescothick and Nasser Hussain put on 185 for the second wicket for England.

Both men hit centuries, with Hussain recording his first-ever ton in international one-day cricket.

It was a special moment for the England captain - and he gestured wildly to the press box in defiance of the critics who had questioned his decision to bat a number three.

India began their innings extremely brightly, with Sourav Ganguly smashing a series of boundaries through the covers and Virender Sehwag showing some real craft.

When both men were out, the middle order caved in as Giles and Alec Tudor took two wickets each.

But then Kaif and Yuvraj joined forces.

When Yuvraj was finally dismissed by Paul Collingwood, Kaif continued to hit boundaries.

England did claim the wickets of Harbhajan Singh and Anil Kumble in quick succession, but it was too little too late for the home side.
