Seamers Matthew Hoggard and Andy Caddick have powered England to a crushing victory over Sri Lanka in the second Test.

The home side's win gives them a 1-0 series lead with just one match remaining.

Hoggard and Caddick claimed one wicket each in the morning session as the day started with the tourists 252 runs behind with just eight wickets in hand.

Both those wickets came in the first 40 minutes of the day.

Sri Lanka got off to the worst possible start, losing Marvan Atapattu in the third over as Hoggard took his third wicket of the innings.

Atapattu, the man who provides stability in a batting order dominated by strokemakers, departed for 56 when he played-on a ball that nipped back to leave Sri Lanka 135-3.

Caddick struck with the second new ball

Mahela Jayawardene brought-up his half-century having struck five fours, but was unable to provide the innings of substance his side so desperately needed.

Caddick bowled a superb length throughout the morning and he got his reward when Jayawardene was tempted into playing at a ball outside off-stump, and edged a catch to Graham Thorpe at first slip. He made 59.

Just before lunch, Aravinda de Silva survived two confident leg before appeals from Ashley Giles, who could have had Hashan Tillekeratne caught at short leg where Michael Vaughan missed a tough chance.

Lunch was taken with de Silva and Hashan Tillekeratne producing a fine partnership that was frustrating England.

But after the interval the new ball was immediately taken, and it proved an instant hit for England.

First, Caddick used the same inswinging yorker that Hoggard had found joy with on Saturday to make a mess of Tillekeratne's stumps, as he was out for 39.

Then de Silva was caught on the back foot when he should have been forward and he edged into the safe hands of Thorpe to depart for 47.

Hoggard struck twice in one over to bring up a five-wicket haul when he had Russel Arnold pouched at mid-off then beat Charitha Buddika for pace.

And with Muttiah Muralitharan unable to bat due to pain in his shoulder, England needed just one more wicket.

Chaminda Vaas produced a bit of a cameo to keep the champagne on ice, but eventually Giles had him stumped for 28 and the end had come for England less than an hour after lunch.
