How will England fare this summer?
England seamer Matthew Hoggard
England beat Sri Lanka by an innings and 111 runs at Edgbaston.

How do you rate the performance of Nasser Hussain's men?

HAVE YOUR SAY

Seamers Matthew Hoggard and Andy Caddick powered England to a crushing victory over Sri Lanka in the second Test.

Hoggard's man-of-the-match performance in particular was encouraging - coming after his disappointment at Lords.

With England's batsmen hitting form - Trescothick and Vaughan both impressed with their centuries - the omens look good.

How do you think this England team will fare this summer?

HAVE YOUR SAY

England produced a fine team effort to beat Sri Lanka. Bowlerss ,Caddick and Hoggard, and batsmen, Trescothick and Thorpe ,lead the way for their innings victory. Sri Lanka could make a good challenge in their last test with their spinners.
Dhammika , Sri Lanka

England bowlers, especially Caddick and Hoggard, bowled well to beat Sri Lanka. Otherwise Sri Lanka's batsmen failed to impress and they were struggling in the first innings. However the England team batted with more confidence; with Trescothick and Thrope leading the way with superb centuries.

Nazar Hussain and his team beat Sri Lanka in all three departments. But Sri Lanka could produce a good fight in the third test to level the series.
Dhammika, Sri Lanka

England does not have the calibre players like Gooch, Botham and Gower in the current squad. The squad of the 1980s and 1990s never won a World Cup with quality players like Botham and Gower and I don't expect them to contend in the next World Cup either. England will have difficulty competing against South Africa, Australia and Pakistan who have more talent and experience.
Sam Malik, USA

To Roche John of Belgium: What has the size of cricket players got to do with skill? Bradman was a small man and he caned the 'big Englishmen'. The English are a solid and rather boring side that play well in conditions suited to them. They are never going to set the world on fire with their batting or bowling.
Mike, USA

Why are we persisting with a spinner of no quality in the England side?
Gerry Flynn, Nottingham

When the Sri Lankan Lion is wounded it is ferocious. Watch out England the third Test will be interesting.
Ishan De Silva, Cardiff < The undoubtedly very fine England effort against Sri Lanka at Edgbaston will need to be repeated if we are to consider any talk of a resurgence in cricket power terms. While generally the "big boys" delivered, the lack of runs from Stewart (who should NOT be in the team), Giles and Tudor is worrying, given the (normally) solid mid-order batting of the Sri Lankans.

Where everything else is equal, that fact alone is a potential worry for us. Against India, who tend to play poorly away from home, England have the power to win the series if, again, the "big boys" (Trescos, Thorpe, Caddick and Hoggard) are able to perform well.

The Indian team, albeit with great players like Tenders, Dravid, Laxman, Harbajan and Kumble, appears to have a soft underbelly. Also, the sheer size of many of England's players (Flintoff, Hoggard, Tudor, Trescos, Giles and, to a lesser degree, Vaughan) could be daunting from an Indian perspective.

I have tickets for three of the Tests, so shall be better able to comment once the series is over.
Roche John, Belgium

England bowled very well, but they may rue the decision to drop Crawley for Giles
Manjit Mand, England

Yet he still managed to bowl the best delivery of all time to dismiss Butcher. The other 10 players in the Sri Lankan team will need to support their superstar to be competitive.
Darren Hart, Australia

Why are we persisting with a spinner of no quality in the England side? He is prone to injury and cannot spin the ball to trouble a batsman of quality.
Gerry Flynn, Nottingham

England bowled very well, but they may rue the decision to drop Crawley for Giles. I can understand England wanting to play a balanced side but Crawley is by the best player of spin in England and the one batsman who can take on Murali.

England's top order all struggle to play spin as does Flintoff and Stewart. England will rely heavily on Thorpe and Hussain in this Test match. My view is that if England were so keen to go in with a spinner, then I believe England should explore the possibility of Crawley keeping wicket and batting at six with Flintoff coming in at seven.

England must be congratulated for an excellent bowling display. Let's hope they can keep it up well at least until the Indians arrive latter on in the summer.
Manjit Mand, England
