Hussain: 'Andy has stepped up'
Marvan Atapattu lasted less than three overs

Proud England captain Nasser Hussain was able to reflect on an emphatic Test victory on Sunday in which his team was stronger than the opposition in every department of the game.

Hussain praised his team's all-round performance after two batsmen scored centuries and Sri Lanka were twice bowled out cheaply with his team winning by an innings and 111 runs.

Sri Lanka collapsed after lunch on the fourth day, losing their last five wickets for 39 runs as England took a 1-0 lead in the series with one Test left to play.

"Everyone contributed and we used the conditions well to get 500 on a wicket that suited their bowlers," Hussain said.

"To then bowl them out cheaply was excellent and it was a bit like one of our collapses. The second new ball was the key. The catches were all held and it was a good team performance."

The man of the match award went to Matthew Hoggard, who took five for 92 in the second innings, but Hussain singled out Caddick for praise, after the big Somerset seamer grabbed three big wickets in each innings.

"Andy Caddick has stepped up in Darren Gough's absence and the way he has got key wickets at key times is very pleasing as captain."

England head to Old Trafford next week 1-0 up in the series but will be wary of complacency at a ground where Pakistan levelled the series last summer.

Chance of winning

"We have been here before and let ourselves down," Hussain said. "Old Trafford will suit one of their off-spinners (Muralitharan), but if we play like this then we have a chance of winning."

Hoggard went into the match under pressure after a faltering performance at Lord's, but responded in the perfect way with his best bowling figures in England.

"I went into the game lacking a bit of confidence," he said. "I was told I had a 50-50 chance of playing so to come through with the man of the match award is brilliant."

Sri Lanka captain Sanath Jayasuriya is confident his side can level the series, with Muttiah Muralitharan having had time to rest his shoulder before the series resumes.

"He was not 100 per cent in this match," Jayasuriya said. "But he always gives 100 per cent and I was very happy with the way he bowled.

"This match is now history and we have got to look forward to next week. We can come back and do well in the third Test."
