Wallace puts county first

Rodney Marsh was full of praise for Mark Wallace
Glamorgan wicketkeeper Mark Wallace says he wants to concentrate on his county career before thinking about securing an international place.

The 20-year-old made a fine start to the season, scoring an unbeaten 106 in the Welsh county's 163-run defeat against Derbyshire.

On top of his impressive winter with the Cricket Academy and fulsome praise from Academy director Rodney Marsh, Wallace's display can only help England's search for a wicketkeeper/batsman to battle it out with first choice James Foster.

But the Abergavenny-born player, who also gave a tidy performance behind the stumps, is keen to play down the possibility of graduating to the senior side.

"I think it's a long way off yet," said Wallace after his maiden first-class ton had failed to stop Derbyshire claiming victory in Cardiff.

"Besides, I'm not really cemented in the Glamorgan side yet.

"That has to be my first objective. Play a full season of county cricket and then let things take care of themselves."

His superb century was all the more commendable as it came on top of a third-ball duck in the first innings.

"I had a few phone calls from the friends I made on the Academy tour, who were quick to remind me I was on a pair. I suppose the best way to get off a pair is to score 100.

England wicketkeeper James Foster
James Foster had an uncertain winter behind the stumps for England

"I will keep working on my batting and - you never know - I might overtake Robert Croft in the order! But Alec Stewart has shown that you can bat at number three in Tests, so you have to strive to get higher and higher."

And the former England under-19s captain said he is feeling the benefit of the trip to Australia under the guidance of Marsh.

"I think I have matured a lot after the winter away. I know my personal game a lot better and I have picked up a few more shots.

"Simon Jones, who also went on the trip, took a career-best in this game too, and he will agree that it's a great experience."
