The England and Wales Cricket Board's First Class Forum decided in favour of the radical change despite some reservations, including from the Welsh county. The new contest will come into force from 2003, and replace the Benson and Hedges Cup. It will run for three seasons. Matches will last three hours and will start at either 5.30pm or 7.30pm under floodlights, and if it succeeds in attracting youngsters to the game, then it will continue.
Fatkin said: "It's probably too strong to say Glamorgan were totally against it. We discussed it at committee level and a lot of people can see the commercial arguments because audiences are declining. "But obviously there are purists out there who think 20-over cricket isn't cricket in the traditional sense. It was just a question of listening to debate and going one way or the other. "Now that it's in, we'll get right behind it." Fatkin is hopeful that young fans can be drawn into the game by watching the exciting shorter game. "Cricket has had a history of trying to provide events when there's no-one around," he said. "That's why weekend cricket is so popular. "Hopefully, this short form - being played in high summer and early evening - will give young people and kids going home from school the opportunity to watch. "We have to be realistic in our markets. We know one-day cricket has a market and hopefully this will generate a new one." |
