The former England Test star, now 39, is quitting following a five year stint as skipper. The South African-born Smith played in 62 Tests for England, scoring 4236 runs at an impressive average of 43. Many seasoned judges believe that he was discarded too soon from the international set-up after an apparent weakness against spin undermined his confidence. 'I've enjoyed every single minute it has been absolutely fantastic and a great honour," Smith told the Portsmouth News. 'Although I feel I've taken us on to a slightly different level to where we were, I know my limitations as captain and I don't feel I can take the club on to any greater heights because of the way I am. 'I'm very soft and just think they need more of a disciplinarian as captain," he added. Smith has had his most prolific season for since 1999, scoring 832 runs at 34 in first-class cricket. However, he has been limited in his appearances in one-day cricket in particular, with Will Kendall taking over the captain's reins. Kendall will now be favourite to take the captaincy on a permanent basis although former Lancashire skipper and England Test star John Crawley could also be an option. Smith is intending to continue playing for Hampshire next season and after 20 years service he will receive a testimonial in 2003. 'If it is going to be my last year I want to go out there, enjoy my cricket and end on a high,' Smith commented. |
