County Championship D1, Southampton: Surrey 418 & 422-8 dec beat Hampshire 327 & 390 by 123 runs
Points: Surrey 20, Hampshire 6

Hampshire refused to end their County Championship season without a fight at the Rose Bowl but champions Surrey still completed a 123-run victory.

Set an improbable 514 for victory, the hosts, whose place in division two for next season was certain before the match began, recovered from the loss of early wickets.

Martin Bicknell took the first five wickets to fall, including Jason Laney, James Adams and John Crawley with just 27 on the board.

Opener Neil Johnson survived to reach 86 and, once the former Zimbabwe all-rounder was bowled by Ian Salisbury, Nic Pothas and Dimitri Mascarenhas added 98 for the seventh wicket.

But, after the part-time medium pace of Ian Ward had Mascarenhas lbe for a 62-ball 67 (the Surrey captain's third wicket in a 10-year career), leg-spinner Salisbury ran through the lower order.

Pothas was caught one run short of his century, having hit 12 boundaries in a 142-ball stay.

And Salisbury completed figures of four for 116 when he had last man James Tomlinson caught four balls later.

Surrey were able to declare overnight on 422 for eight after third day centuries from Ward and Graham Thorpe.
