The 37-year-old middle order batsman has scored more than 20,000 first-class runs for the club, including 40 centuries, and 10,000 in one-day cricket. He helped the county complete a Championship and NatWest Trophy double in 1987 and was also a member of the team which won the 1989 B&H Cup and 1991 Sunday League. Johnson was chosen for the 1992 England A tour to the West Indies and made a half century in the second unofficial Test in St Vincent, but never received senior international recognition. He was appointed Notts captain in 1996 and held the job for three years. Johnson will make his final Championship appearance against Worcestershire on Wednesday before taking up a new job on the coaching staff. "I've managed to win every domestic honour with Notts and that's something a lot of players better than myself have not been lucky enough to achieve," he said. "I just hope I can go out on a real high by helping Notts to gain promotion to Division One of the County Championship this season." Johnson is the third stalwart of the county scene to decide to call it a day at the end of the season. Lancashire batsman Neil Fairbrother and Worcestershire all-rounder Stuart Lampitt confirmed their retirement plans last week. |
