Surrey storm to victory

County Championship, D1, day three of four, Grace Road: Leicestershire 290 & 289 lost to Surrey 454-6 & 42-3 by seven wickets

Surrey tightened their grip on the championship trophy with a seven wicket win against Leicestershire at Grace Road.

England paceman Alex Tudor took four wickets in Leicestershire's second innings after Darren Maddy again held up Surrey's progress.

The Foxes resumed on 265-6, and may have been distracted by news of general manager James Whitaker's resignation as they were soon forced to follow-on.

Pakistani leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed dismissed Jamie Grove and Philip DeFreitas to end with five wickets and James Ormond ended Leicestershire's innings on 290, still 250 behind Surrey.

Leicestershire made a better fist of their second innings after Maryin Bicknell had removed Trevor Ward for 16.

Maddy and Iain Sutcliffe put on 156 for the second wicket as the home side put up a fight.

Sutcliffe hit 10 fours in his 64 before Bicknell struck again.

Mushtaq removed Darren Stevens for 14 and the writing was on the wall when Ormond trapped Maddy lbw six runs short of a deserved century.

Maddy hit 16 boundaries in his 94 to add to his first innings effort of 81 and five Surrey wickets.

Mushtaq and Tudor then cleaned up as the gates opened and Leicestershire collapsed to 289 all out from 182-1.

Tudor claimed 4-54 and Mushtaq took three wickets for 113 runs to end with eight in the match.

Surrey suffered a late scare as Matt Whiley removed Ian Ward and Devon Malcolm struck twice with the visitors needing 40 to win.

But a 10-ball 14 from Ali Brown saw Surrey home with seven wickets and a day to spare.
