Surrey turn the screw
Darren Maddy
Maddy held Surrey at bay for a while
County Championship, D1, day two of four, Grace Road: Leicestershire 265-6 v Surrey 540

Darren Maddy's sterling all-round efforts could not prevent Surrey moving into a commanding position on the second day of their clash with Leicestershire at Grace Road.

The former England man returned admirable figures of five for 85 as Surrey were bowled out for 540, and did his best to anchor Leicestershire's reply with a gritty 81.

It could prove to be in vain, though, as the six wickets the hosts lost in reaching 265 at the close means they face a sizeable task to avoid the follow-on target of 390.

Mushtaq Ahmed
Mushtaq took three wickets
Iain Sutcliffe, who fell two short of a half-century, and Trevor Ward (39) offered some resistance, but three wickets for former Pakistan leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed hinted at the problems Leicestershire will face on day three.

Sutcliffe and Ward had looked reasonably comfortable during a first-wicket stand worth 65, and the former added a further 98 with Maddy after his partner had edged Alex Tudor to Ally Brown at first slip.

Maddy's driving was typically impressive and he struck a six and 12 fours in his 81.

An outside edge off Mushtaq did for Sutcliffe, Darren Stevens played on to Martin Bicknell and Indian Mohammad Kaif was adjudged lbw offering no stroke to the Pakistani leg-spinner.

Mushtaq claimed the prized scalp of Maddy, trapped in front playing back to a googly, and Rob Cunliffe was yorked by Ormond to erase any hopes that Leicestershire had of ending the day on a positive note.

The remainder of the Surrey innings was notable largely for Rikki Clarke's failure to emulate team-mates Mark Butcher and Brown by reaching three figures.

He fell five short of what would have been his second century of the season, taken by wicketkeeper Neil Burns off Maddy after almost three hours at the crease.
