Yorkshire fight back
Vic Craven marshalled Yorkshire's fightback
County Championship, division two, Guildford: Yorkshire 172 & 254-3 v Surrey 382

Yorkshire's batsmen displayed more steel in their second innings to halt Surrey's advance at Guildford.

Unbeaten half centuries from Darren Lehmann and Michael Lumb stopped the rot as bottom-placed Yorkshire fought back to ensure that the division one leaders did not have everything their own way.

Jonathan Batty earlier fell one short of his century as Surrey were dismissed for 382, a first innings lead of 210.

Resuming on 78no, Batty made assured progress to 99 before being clean bowled by Ryan Sidebottom.

He was given good support from promising all-rounder Rikki Clarke, who continued his run of fine form by hitting 56 in 57 balls.

Surrey's tail wagged with Saqlain Mushtaq scoring 44 and James Ormond 39 as the home side piled on the agony for Yorkshire.

But Tykes openers Matthew Wood and Victor Craven responded well with a first wicket stand of 83, before Ed Giddens removed Wood for 43.

Craven went on to complete a half century, but both he and Anthony McGrath were dismissed with the score on 117.

Yorkshire captain Lehmann and Lumb sparked a recovery with an unbroken fourth wicket stand of 137.

Lumb hit 12 fours in his unbeaten 68 and Lehmann 10 boundaries to remain unbeaten on 55 at the close, with Yorkshire 44 runs ahead with six wickets remaining.

Surrey: AJ Hollioake (capt), IJ Ward, JN Batty (wkt), MR Ramprakash, R Clarke, AD Brown, Saqlain Mushtaq, IDK Salisbury, J Ormond, ESH Giddins.

Yorkshire: DS Lehmann (capt), MJ Wood, A McGrath, MJ Lumb, VJ Craven, GM Fellows, RJ Blakey, RKJ Dawson, CEW Silverwood, AKD Gray, RJ Sidebottom, DH Wigley.
