Opener Gayle scored a vital 103 off 116 balls as the visitors reeled in their victory target of 280 with just four balls to spare. West Indies now lead the seven-match series 2-0 after triumphing by four wickets in Jamshedpur on Wednesday. The match was reduced to 47 overs per side after dew on the outfield and crowd trouble combined to force a 30-minute delay at the start of the day. Crowd trouble, which marred the first match, threatened this game after missiles were thrown at Ramnaresh Sarwan, but play resumed after a 10-minute stoppage. India posted a formidable 279 for nine on the back of 78 to captain Sourav Ganguly and 99 to VVS Laxman. Half-way through his innings, Ganguly completed 8,000 runs in one-day internationals, the ninth player to achieve the feat and the third Indian. West Indies took two wickets in the first five overs and five in the last seven, but the middle belonged to the hosts. Ganguly and Laxman shared in a 128-run partnership for the third wicket before the skipper was caught at long-on lofting leg-spinner Mahendra Nagamootoo.
Rahul Dravid, included in the team after overcoming a back strain, then joined Laxman in a 105-run stand for the fifth wicket. But his dismissal for 51, run out by bowler Gayle, sparked a dramatic collapse that saw India add just 12 runs for the last half of their line-up. Laxman fell two balls later, just one run short of his fifth one-day century, stumped as he attempted to drive off-spinner Gayle. Windies opener Wavell Hinds fell to Javagal Srinath for 27 but Gayle and Marlon Samuels kept the visitors on course for victory. They took the score to 176 for one before Samuels was caught off Sehwag for 52. Gayle, who struck eight fours and three sixes, was bowled by Srinath shortly after notching his ton to leave West Indies needing 59 runs to win off 51 balls. The task was an easy one, with Ramnaresh Sarwan and Shivnarine Chanderpaul - both unbeaten on 39 - timing their run to perfection.
