| Saturday, 12 October, 2002, 07:51 GMT 08:51 UK India finish off Windies ![]() Harbhajan ripped through the Windies batting order First Test, Bombay, day four: India (457) beat West Indies (157 & 188) by an innings and 112 runs Spinners Harbhajan Singh and Anil Kumble shared all 10 wickets as India completed their first ever innings victory over the West Indies. Having reached 105 for one, the tourists saw seven wickets fall for just 53 runs before lunch on the fourth day in Bombay. And off-spinner Harbhajan picked up the two remaining batsmen in consecutive overs to see the Caribbean side all out for 188 - 112 runs short of making India bat again. Harbhajan finished with figures of seven for 48 - his 10th five-wicket haul in 29 matches - while Kumble took three for 50.
Ramnaresh Sarwan paid the penalty of driving Kumble away from the body and was caught by Sachin Tendulkar in the covers for 17. Skipper Carl Hooper, one of the best batsmen of spin bowling, failed to live up to his reputation as he offered a simple return catch to Harbhajan. And the lower-order batsmen also failed to read the Indian spin duo as Kumble had Ryan Hinds and Ridley Jacobs caught by close-in fielders off successive deliveries. Mahendra Nagamootoo left alone the hat-trick ball going down the leg-side but he was caught 18 runs later by Ganguly at first slip. Harbhajan then had Mervyn Dillon caught by Rahul Dravid in the slips in the same over. Shivnarine Chanderpaul shepherded the tail through 14 overs after lunch to remain 36 not out. But Pedro Collins's 27-ball innings came to an end when he edged Harbhajan to slip. And Cameron Cuffy provided the spinner with a return catch two overs later. |
