| Sunday, 20 October, 2002, 07:26 GMT 08:26 UK India claim series win ![]() India's bowlers had plenty to celebrate Second Test, Madras, day four: India 316 and 81-2 bt West Indies 167 and 229 by 8 wickets India have claimed an overwhelming series-winning victory over the West Indies, toasting another fine display of off-spin bowling by Harbhajan Singh. It was their first win in a Test series over the West Indies for 23 years. On a dry wicket ideally suited to his variations, Harbhajan hustled through the West Indian lower order on the fourth morning. He claimed three of the final six wickets to fall in a single over for match figures of seven for 135. Harbhajan's sterling performance came on the back of his eight-wicket haul in the comprehensive win for India in Bombay. Sarwan adds just 16 The series now stands at 2-0 with just one more Test, at Calcutta, remaining. West Indies began the day on 186 for four with Ramnaraesh Sarwan going nicely on 62. But he added just 16 to his overnight score, and the tourists' tail-end batting, undoubtedly its weakest element, was blown away. Harbhajan was not the sole tormentor of the West Indies. Left-arm fast bowler Zaheer Khan, who finished with three for 23 in the innings, dismisses Sarwan leg-before with the batsman trying to work the ball on the on-side. Harbhajan, the first bowler to claim 50 Test victims this calendar year, then claimed three wickets off five balls in his ninth over of the morning session. Dillon unlucky Ryan Hinds was caught in the covers attempting a big heave which he completely mistimed. Gareth Breese was caught by Ganguly at backward short-leg while Merv Dillon looked unlucky to be given out lbw. Zaheer then had Ridley Jacobs caught behind before bowling last-man Jermaine Lawson for two with a yorker. The victory target was 81, and it was reached in the 22nd over of India's second innings, with Carl Hooper earning two consolation wickets. Virender Sehwag (33) and Sanjay Bangar (20) fell to his off-spinners before Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar brought up the winning runs.
