British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion Danny Williams outclassed challenger Keith Long to keep his crowns on Tuesday evening. The 29-year-old Williams went the full 12 rounds with the stubborn Long but ultimately had the all-round ability to keep the 34-year-old at bay to win on points. Williams was awarded the fight at Bethanl Green's York Hall 117-113 to earn the right to keep the Lonsdale belt. After a turbulent opening three rounds where heavy blows were traded by both men, the fight settled down with Long content to work inside and hold Williams. Long was visibly tiring as the match entered into its final stages but survived the 11th round when Williams landed a big right hand. Long, with only 10 professional belts to his name, never took a backward step in the bout and launched a gallant final round effort in an attempt to win the titles. Despite his final flourish the judge was not swayed and Williams was awarded the fight. Williams told BBC1: "Keith Long has an awkward style - he is very, very strong. He is better than he looks. "It feels good. I've been out of the ring for several months because of politics and it feels very good to win the Lonsdale belt." He refused to be drawn on his future, but said he would talk to his management before deciding whether to forfeit his titles in search of higher honours. |
