| Wednesday, 11 September, 2002, 14:34 GMT 15:34 UK Harrison to face Chacon ![]() Scott Harrison will fight for the WBO crown Scott Harrison will get his first shot at a world title when he faces WBO featherweight champion Julio Pablo Chacon at the Braehead Arena in Glasgow on 19 October. And if Harrison is successful in front of his home town crowd it could lead to a mouth-watering Battle of Britain with Northern Ireland's Wayne McCullough. The Chacon fight was originally scheduled for June but injury to the Argentine title holder enforced a delay. Harrison retained his Commonwealth featherweight title in March by outclassing Australian Tony Wehbee and put on a powerful performance to stop Puerto Rican Victor Santiago, who stepped in to replace Chacon in the summer. "I've had to prepare twice for this fight," Harrison told BBC Scotland. "I only had three or four days notice before my shot at a world title was cancelled."
"I'm focused and ready. I'm just itching to get on with it," the Scot continued. "There will be no messing about. I want to get in there and win the title as quickly as I can." However, the 27-year-old Chacon will be no pushover, having won 43 of his 45 professional fights, with 31 coming by way of knockout. Harrison should be cheered on by around 5,000 of his countrymen at Braehead and wants to put on a top class display. "It's a dream for me to fight in my own home town for the world title," Harrison explained. Harrison's manager Frank Warren also announced plans to bring Harrison and McCullough together.
"Whoever wins that fight between Scott and Chacon, which is a tough contest, will be facing Wayne probably sometime in December or January," said Warren. Belfast's McCullough, who got his licence back after a two-year fight with the British Boxing Board of Control, is excited at the prospect of facing Harrison and a possible unification battle. "He (Harrison) is a good fighter and is strong. He will have a difficult task against Chacon, but hopefully he will come through that," said McCullough. "I'm going to have two or three fights first. This will prove who is the true champion and it would be good to have this." |
