Crises and Captaincies
News image

I've been reading in the papers that I'm set to continue as Welsh captain for the autumn internationals.

I hope that's true as it's something I really enjoy - but I'm going to have to wait until Steve Hansen decides on Tuesday to really find out!

It was part of my learning experience as a player to captain the side in South Africa in the summer, and I felt it went well even if the results weren't too good.

Scott Quinnell
Scott Quinnell will have a huge influence on Wales, whether captain or not
But if I don't get the nod the new captain can be sure of my full support.

I know there's some major competition for back-row places, and I'll be glad just to be on the pitch.

We're looking for a jumper at the back of the line out, so Nathan Budgett and Michael Owen are seriously pushing for places.

Scott Quinnell

Scott Quinnell is a certainty and with only three spots available someone has to be sacrificed.

Scott has been such a strong player and leader for Wales.

He hasn't played much because of injuries this year and it may help him to have the burden of captaincy lifted from his shoulders.

He'll have a major influence on the team in whatever capacity he's chosen.

Swansea

It'll be good to get back into the international set-up. The troubles at Swansea have been clear for all to see and a change of scene should do me good.

Barring freak results I think we have to accept that we won't be advancing from our Heineken Cup group.

Swansea coach John Connolly
Charvis says Swansea aren't implementing Connolly's ideas
I've been with Swansea for seven years now - and I hope for another two so I can finish my career here - but these are the worst times the club has known.

There's talk of a merger with Neath and that has to be a positive thing. The Welsh clubs just aren't performing in the Celtic or European competitions.

We've come to realise that we haven't got a strong squad, and those playing haven't applied themselves as they should.

The fingers will be pointed at John Connolly, but he's a good coach who's frustrated that players aren't showing a professional attitude.

He's trying to teach us new things and we aren't reacting to it as we should.

John's preaching a style of play that's very similar to the way French teams approach games - look at Stade Francais last year and you'll see that many of our moves are straight out of their play book.

The structured, pod system can be alien to Welsh players, but it got us some great wins under Graham Henry.

Whatever system your coach wants you to express you have to learn it, practice it and get it right.

The game is moving on and coaching has to move with it.
