London Irish have picked up only their second victory of the season after overcoming an out-of-sorts Edinburgh in the Heineken Cup.

The Exiles have struggled to recapture the form which saw them near the top of the Zurich Premiership throughout last season.

But first-half tries by Darren Edwards and Michael Horak, and 14 points from the ever-faithful boot of man of the match Barry Everitt were enough for the win.

Afterwards director of rugby Conor O'Shea said: "It is only one win but if we continue playing like that then we will be hard to play against.

Neither side looked convincing at the Madejski Stadium but it was the Scots' poor discipline which effectively cost them the match.

Time and again they were penalised for a host of infringements in point-scoring positions.

The visitors struggled to make their mark on the opening 40 minutes as Duncan Hodge missed the target with his first two penalties.

The first half was all about the Exiles, as Edwards and Horak both crossed the try line.

Everitt was successful with one of the conversions and added a further two penalties for 18 unanswered points.

With just five minutes remaining of the half, though, Edinburgh were finally gifted an opportunity when Kieron Dawson was sin binned for a professional foul.

It took just one minute for the Scots to make it count, Allan Jacobsen going over but Hodge failed with the conversion.

Everitt quickly got his side further ahead with another penalty soon after the break and a drop kick.

And their cause was further helped when Edinburgh captain Todd Blackadder was sin binned in the 65th minute for handling the ball illegally.

The hosts failed to turn the screw in his absence, instead easing comfortably to the win.

Edinburgh coach Frank Hadden described the defeat as an "opportunity missed".

He said: "I thought that we played reasonably well, but we were always chasing the game after conceding 11 points early on."
