| Sunday, 20 October, 2002, 18:13 GMT 19:13 UK Should Charvis captain Wales? ![]() Wales coach Steve Hansen has named Colin Charvis as his captain for the autumn rugby union internationals. Do you think Charvis is the right choice? Steve Hansen has kept faith with Colin Charvis to captain Wales after the Swansea man performed effectively in South Africa. Charvis has endured a difficult start to the season as his club face a crisis both on and off the field. Scott Quinnell was the other main contender for the captain's role, even though questions over his fitness still remain. Will Charvis be able to inspire the team? This debate is now closed I think Gareth Llewelyn should be skipper, he's experienced, and confidence is growing as he is in such fine form. Welsh rugby needs to put a dynamic leader in their team: eg Mefin Davies of Ponty, and why oh why is Martyn Madden still not a member of the team?? Have the Welsh not found a New Zealander (or Aussie, or South African) good enough for their captain's position. I suggest they just look harder at these countries and pick a suitable player to become "Welsh". We need to solidify the captain's position, one of the experienced players in the backs with a few more years of rugby left in them, Mark Taylor or Stephen Jones. In the backs they would have a better outlook on the game as it played itself out. How about a vice-captain in the forwards, Quinnell, Charvis or Mefin Davies. Let's get Harris playing full-back, defence and attack in one, we need someone who can take a bashing playing in this position. With his lamentable attitude and his trend for only turning it on every three or four performances per season in a Welsh shirt, I'd say he was lucky to be in the squad let alone the captain!
Scott or Colin makes no difference; our game is yet again in serious crisis. We seem to always find ourselves playing catch-up to the rest of the world. Once upon a time we were leaders in world rugby, now we're following the pack and I think we're about 10 years behind. Scrap the lot and put the under-21s in, see if that doesn't fix it! But as for a captain, Scott every time, best leader we've got. Making Colin Charvis Wales captain just epitomises the 'jobs for the boys' ethos that seems to be rife in Welsh rugby. Charvis is as Welsh as Michael Owen is English, and plays like it most of the time. Although he isn't getting any younger I think Gareth Llewellyn should get the job on a short-term basis as at least he plays with his heart on his sleeve. It has to be Stephen Jones, a remarkably mature player for his age who can run the show. Charvis should not be captain. He is playing for the worst side in Britain at the moment his morale is likely to be at an all-time low. In my opinion SQ is the only man for the job.
It's time for the WRU to get some backbone. Let's instil a provincial system in Wales, which would set the game finally in the right direction. It's shameful when we get beaten by the likes of Argentina. As for captain? It's got to be Quinnell - oh and why on earth isn't Llanelli's Matin Madden playing for Wales? He's one of the best props in Britain. Steve Hansen has made some big decisions in choosing his squad for the autumn internationals. Leaving out the likes of Gareth Thomas and Dafydd James is brave, and I admire him for that. I do think however, that the Bridgend duo have been playing very well in a poor side this season and how Andy Marinos was selected ahead of them I don't know. As far as the rest of the squad go, I think the selection of the props and second rows is spot on, they've all been playing well and deserve a chance to prove themselves. Maybe Gareth Williams of Bridgend could have squeezed in as hooker somewhere - he's a great talent. I haven't got many complaints about the selection of the back row or the rest of the backs, all those selected have been playing well, and there isn't that much depth in Wales anyway.
Colin Charvis would rather go on holiday than play for Wales; I think his choice as captain of Wales is disgraceful - and a measure of just how ridiculous Welsh rugby is at the moment. Colin is not playing well enough to guarantee selection. Scott should captain the side when fit and playing. Gareth has had his day as Welsh captain, I feel it would asking Stephen Jones to do to much so it has to be Mefin Davies and long overdue it is as well. Charvis has been playing in a very poor Swansea team and has not shown the form to be selected in the starting XV, let alone be captain. Quinnell, although powerful and a 'lead from the front' type of character, looks like he's limping from injury to injury and is even sitting out contact training in a bid to rest injuries - you NEED your captain involved in crucial training session's - he's got to exert his authority in these area's as well as on the pitch. It's a shame, because he is probably the most consistent world-class player we have. The only other option is see is Martyn Williams - having a great season in a Cardiff pack that are flying backwards and in a well-respected Wales regular. Steven Jones will only flounder under the captaincy as there is enough pressure on him to run the show at 10 already. Mark Taylor is out with a long standing injury and his international days look numbered while Mefin Davies is obviously an inspired leader for Ponty - but can he realistically expect to be named as No.1 hooker for Wales? Gareth Llewelyn has had one chance too many in the Welsh shirt unfortunately, although a good club player. So the flame haired link man from Cardiff should get the captaincy I feel.
Colin, in all fairness hasn't had the best season so far with Swansea, on and off the field. Quinnell's fitness poses an awkward decision for Hansen. Personally, either Stephen Jones should get it or bring Mefin Davies in and give him the captain's job. Wales need to pick a couple of wingers with genuine speed. We seem to have a number of them at the moment. Rhys Williams (Cardiff) and Mark Jones (Llanelli)are two examples. You're just trying to paper over the cracks by 'tinkering' with your national squad. Bite the bullet guys, get yourselves five good provincial style clubs (at the most) and help set up a properly structured Celtic League like the ZP, it is starting to work for us (Ireland), if you don't you'll be struggling to beat Italy from now on. It could be anyone; my money however is on Scott Quinnell if he is fit and playing or give the honour to whoever plays fly-half! They are the only players who I think may be guaranteed their slot in the side (I assume it will be Stephen Jones at fly-half, but that boy Harries may pip him in one game). There are not many other players deserving it at the moment. The only other players I would consider giving it to are Martyn Williams, Gareth Llewellyn or Andy Marinos. No bias whatsoever in those decisions as I support Cardiff!!!
I'd give the captaincy to Charvis. He showed his leadership qualities on the South African tour. I think he improves as a player when given extra responsibility. In contrast I do not think that Quinnell improves as a player when captaining Wales. The world class player should be the captain. England are spoilt for choices Wales sadly are not. The only choice therefore is Scott Quinnell, a natural leader, an inspiration to all those who play in the mighty Red. Wales are in trouble as Steve Hansen isn't good enough to turn them around and as for captain there is not really anyone good enough at their game to concentrate on being captain as well. It hurts to write it but I'm afraid it's true, just look how the Welsh clubs are doing in Europe. Stephen Jones would be my choice. He is by far a better stand off than Harris and has proved his game playing ability at the highest level. Fly-half is the perfect position for captain also as ultimately it is the key decision making position. Wales could solve many of their problems by finally selecting Mefin Davies and making him captain to boot. |
