| Garcia takes 5,000m crown Garcia's rivals had no answer to his late burst Spain's Alberto Garcia stormed to victory with a devastating sprint finish in the men's 5,000m at the European Championships in Munich. Garcia added to the European indoor 3,000m crown he won in March as he pulled away to win in 13:38.18. Ismail Sghyr of France took silver in 13:39.81 with Ukraine's Sergiy Lebid third in 13:40.00. The race began slowly and developed into a tactical battle with none of the runners keen to set the pace. Lebid picked up the tempo at one stage but the runners were still bunched together at the 3,000m mark. Garcia was in a group of five at the front as the field became stretched with two laps to go. And the Spaniard left his rivals to battle it out for the minor placings with a brilliant burst from 200 metres out. Ireland's Mark Carroll finished sixth in 13:42.87 and Britain's Sam Haughian was ninth in 13:50.75. |
