European Athletics: day two

Daniel Caines
Caines was the form man in the 400m

Britain's Dwain Chambers wins gold in the 100m ahead of Portugal's Francis Obikwelu. Defending champion Darren Campbell has to settle for bronze.

In the women's event, Ekatherini Thanou lives up to her pre-race favourite billing with gold.

Jade Johnson, a Commonwealth Games silver medallist, matches that performance with second place in the women's long jump final.

Daniel Caines, the British number one over 400m, looks in great shape in the semi-finals, winning in a time of 45.35s.


Men's 10,000m
Spain have the final celebration on day two of the athletics in Munich, as Jose Manuel Martinez outsprints Germany's Dieter Baumann to win gold.


Decathlon
Roman Sebrele of the Czech Republic ends day one of the decathlon with a 183-point lead over second-placed athlete Erki Nool of Estonia.

Finland's Jaakko Ojaniemi completes a strong first day in the current bronze medal position.


Women's discus
Ekaterina Vogoli earns gold for Greece with a best of 64.31m. Russia's Natalya Sadova breaks up a Greek one-two with silver and Anastasia Kelesidou wins bronze.


Women's long jump
Britain's Jade Johnson jumps a personal best for silver (6.73m), matching her second place in the Commonwealth Games. Russia's Tatyana Kotova is the new European champion, with a furthest jump of 6.85m.


Women's 100m
Ekatherini Thanou, a world championship silver medallist, goes one better in the Europeans in a time of 11.09s.

Kim Gevaert takes home silver for Belgium, while Italy take bronze courtesy of Manuela Levorato.


Men's 100m
Dwain Chambers snatches gold with a new personal best and European Championship record - 9.96s.

Chambers gets off to a sensational start and pulls away from his rivals for a comfortable victory. Portugal's Francis Obikwelu wins silver and defending champion Darren Campbell has to make do with bronze.


Women's 800m
Kelly Holmes, the Commonwealth Games champion over 1500m, runs a confident 800m semi-final. Jo Fenn will miss out on the final after coming home in sixth in the penultimate round.


Men's 400m
British number one Daniel Caines is in stunning form over one lap of the track, winning his heat in 45.35s.

Fellow Brit Tim Benjamin shows resilience to qualify in third place in the second semi.


Men's 3000m steeplechase
Antonio Jimenez, the favourite for gold, wins heat one with a time of 8m27.60s. Holland's Simon Vroemen leads home the second heat, two seconds slower.


Women's 400m
Russian Oleysa Zykina sets the pace in the semi-finals, with a time of 50.47 seconds but there is misery for British runner Catherine Murphy, who pulls up injured in the same race.

Lee McConnell continues her good form from the Commonwealth Games by qualifying in the last of the three semis in a personal best.


Men's hammer
Adrian Annus wins gold for Hungary with a best throw of 81.17m.

Vladyslav Piskunov of the Ukraine seals silver (80.39), and Greek thrower Alexandros Papadimitriou (80.21) snatches bronze.


Women's 400m hurdles
Sinead Dudgeon ensures a British presence in the final after finishing second in her semi-final.

Team-mate Natasha Danvers, who fell in the Commonwealth Games final, fails to gain automatic qualification but joins her team-mate in the final as a fastest loser.


Men's 400m hurdles
The Great Britain duo of Chris Rawlinson and Anthony Borsumato both finish second in their respective heats to qualify for the semi-finals.

Matt Elias initially joins them as the last of the four fastest losers but Spaniard Jose Maria Romero, who had been disqualified from an earlier heat, is then re-instated.


Women's hammer
Britain's Lorraine Shaw, the Commonwealth Games gold medallist, fails to qualify for the final after a throw of 61.50m.

Russian Olga Kuzenkova leads the standings with a throw 68.45m.


Women's pole vault
All of the main challengers make it through to the final with eight athletes clearing 4.40m - a new championship record - including the European record holder Svetlana Feofanova.


Women's 20km walk
Russian Olimpiada Ivanova takes gold winning by a comfortable margin in a time of one hour 26.42 minutes, with her compatriot Yelena Nikolayeva second and Italy's Erica Alfridi third.


Men's javelin
Steve Backley easily reaches the final with a massive throw of 85.76m, well over the qualifying mark of 82m.

His great rival Jan Zelezny of the Czech Republic, Russian Sergei Makarov, Boris Henry of Germany and Mick Hill also all qualify.
