The former Liverpool forward made the most of hesitant defending to give Denis Smith's men some silverware before the start of the season. The first half was an even affair, with Jones and Steve Thomas going close for the Dragons, before Ashley Nicholls cracked the bar for Darlington. After the break, Andy Dibble made a couple of important saves before Jones seized his chance in the 65th minute and fired Wrexham ahead. Apart from a Mark Sheerin shot, they held on comfortably to lift the trophy again and striker Lee Trundle was voted man-of-the-match. Wrexham: Dibble (Dawson, 90); Holmes (P Edwards, 46), C Edwards (Phillips, 46), Roberts, Carey, Pejic (Lawrence, 46), Thomas, Barrett, Trundle, Jones, Sam (Russell, 78). Swansea 0-2 Crystal Palace The Swans suffered defeat in their first home friendly of the season, as they were sunk by two first-half goals. Swansea began brightly, with Paul Reid and Jason Smith going close before the visitors took the lead. It was Palace's Welsh connection, Barry-born Gareth Williams, who claimed the goal, seizing on the rebound after Roger Freestone had saved Wayne Routledge's shot. In the 33rd minute, the Eagles doubled their lead as Danny Butterfield - a close season target for Cardiff - took advantage of a static Swans defence to fire home. After the break, it was Palace who continued to hold the upper hand and only a fine save by Freestone prevented Williams from making it three. The commitment shown by both sides was highlighted by a midfield melee in which Reid suffered a cut head, but tempers cooled after that and James Thomas missed a good chance to pull a goal back. Swansea: Freestone; Jenkins, D Smith, O'Leary, J Smith, Evans, Murphy, Reid, Mumford (Moss, 74), Thomas, Williams (Wood, 67). Berwick Rangers 0-1 Cardiff City Rhys Weston was the surprise scorer as Cardiff City continued their Scottish tour with victory at Berwick. It was the first goal of the defender's career, and came after 67 minutes of friendly football. Lennie Lawrence fielded a 4-3-3 formation, but it was not until the 45th minute that either goalkeeper was called into action. Martyn Margetson, on trial in the Bluebirds' No 1 shirt, stopped Mark McCormack's long-range shot. Cardiff's best chance came when Leo Fortune-West was put through by Peter Thorne, but he fired wide, and then the big striker hit the bar with a header. Weston gave Cardiff the lead, but only a glaring miss by Mark Bradley stopped the scores ended level.. Cardiff: Margetson; Weston, Collins (Barker, 67), Prior, Thorne, Hamilton (Maxwell, 70), Boland (Legg, 73), Earnshaw, Whalley, Croft, Fortune-West (Campbell, 67). Midfielder Willie Boland was one of two players sent off as both sides ended with ten men. |
