After losing his first four matches of the year Robredo finally got a victory over Jonas Bjorkman in February, and has not looked back. The Spaniard goes into the US Open ranked higher than at any time in his career following three semi-finals and a final, as well as reaching the last eight at the French Open.
There is no doubt that Robredo is happiest on clay but he has enough variety in his game to succeed on hard courts.
He proved as much with a fourth-round place at Flushing Meadows two years ago.
Last season he showed signs of a more aggressive game and also notched up wins over the likes of Greg Rusedski and Thomas Johansson.
Robredo has beaten Marat Safin and Sjeng Schalken on hard courts this season, but the result that impressed most was coming from two sets down to beat Lleyton Hewitt at Roland Garros.
