Ferrero has had an excellent year so far and that is reflected in a seeding of three at Flushing Meadows. Like second seed Roger Federer, the Spaniard finally made the transition from rising star to Grand Slam winner this year, sweeping through the field at the French Open.
And with two more titles to his name, in Monaco and Valencia, he has also spent a brief period at the top of the AT Champions Race.
Most of Ferrero's success has come on clay, with only one of his 10 career titles on hard courts in Hong Kong last year.
The 23-year-old has the game to take on anyone from the baseline, with a rock-solid backhand and a mighty forehand that is among the best around.
He is still not totally comfortable when moving into the forecourt and is rarely seen volleying.
And that may have played a part in his relatively disappointing results during this summer's North American hard court season.
But reaching the quarter-finals at the Australian Open and the fourth round at Wimbledon this year suggests he is ready to go beyond the last 16 at the US Open for the first time.
