Schuettler has crept into the top 10 by producing a consistently high level every week, without really threatening to win a big title. His career high undoubtedly came at this year's Australian Open where he reached the final, but no-one was surprised when he was outclassed by Andre Agassi.
The German still got a huge rankings boost from his run in Melbourne and has since reached six quarter-finals and two semi-finals.
At 27 years old he looks to be reaching his peak, and wins over Andy Roddick, Mark Philippoussis and David Nalbandian this year would back that up.
A baseliner with great agility and a strong return, Schuettler has proved himself a threat on hard courts, reaching the semi-finals in Sydney a week before the Australian Open.
And gaining revenge over Agassi with a victory in Montreal in August will have given him added confidence.
But it is two years since Schuettler won the last of his two career titles, in Shanghai, and his record in New York is poor.
