Lleyton Hewitt has seen his ranking slip from number one this year and lost his Wimbledon title, but remains a threat at Flushing Meadows. After two years spent at the top of the rankings it was maybe natural that the Australian would suffer a slump at some time.
However, questions have been asked about the direction of his career following the departure of two coaches - Darren Cahill and Jason Stoltenberg - in just six months.
Failure to get past the last 16 at a Grand Slam has played a major part in Hewitt's slide down the rankings.
He has won two titles this year on American hard courts in Scottsdale and Indian Wells, and reached the final in Los Angeles only last month.
But poor performances led to early exits at the Masters Series events in Montreal and Cincinnati and Hewitt admitted he "didn't feel 100%".
He has an excellent record at the US Open in recent years but needs to rediscover his renowned battling qualities.
