Agassi goes into the Australian Open in his now familiar role as the veteran of the field, but still in with a great chance of lifting the trophy. The 33-year-old is the defending champion in Melbourne and has put together a remarkable 21-match unbeaten run at Melbourne Park.
He took consecutive titles in 2000 and 2001, missed the following year with injury before returning to triumph once more last year.
However, the eight-times Grand Slam winner showed signs last year that he may just be falling short at the highest level.
He collected four titles and returned to the top of the world rankings thanks to his early season form.
But by his high standards, going out of the French Open in the fourth round was a disappointment, and losing at the same stage at Wimbledon more so.
Defeat to 21-year-old Juan Carlos Ferrero in the semi-finals of the US Open saw him lose his number one ranking to the Spaniard.
Agassi did, though, gain a measure of revenge at the Masters Cup by beating Ferrero on his way to the final and ensuring that fellow American Andy Roddick stole top spot.
